In most cases Contact is a vital part in helping children develop their sense of identity and understand their lives. Foster Carers have a crucial role in supporting children’s relationships with their family.

This course aims to give participants an opportunity to look different types of contact and the language that cares use when recording.

It will give carers the tools to support and prepare the children and young people in their care for contact and where the care plan is reunification.

• What makes a good contact
• How can we make it better
• What challenges may there be and how to overcome them
• Exploring Separation and how to support children and young people with developing a sense of belonging

Learning outcomes

• Have explored the importance of contact in promoting children’s emotional wellbeing and identity, balancing possible contra-indications for contact
• Have considered the factors which can discourage parents’ visits or make things difficult for children

• Understand the foster carer’s role preparing children for contact and working with them after contact sessions

• Consider carers feelings around reunification and how we can support children to understand the process

• Know how to observe and report back the effects on children to contribute to planning future contact

• Looking at language that cares approach when recording.
